Lawn Care Fort Worth | 3 SIMPLE Tips to Beat the Texas Heat

May 27, 20256 min read

Living in Fort Worth means dealing with some serious summer heat. As temperatures climb into the triple digits and rainfall becomes scarce, your lawn faces real challenges. I'm Cole from New Day Landscaping, and after serving over 100 local families with their lawn care needs in Northern Texas and neighboring cities, I've learned what it takes to keep Texas grass thriving even during the harshest summer months.

A big shoutout to Travis at Budget Lawns for creating a great video on this topic. Check out his channel for more beginner-friendly tips on lawn care.

Our Fort Worth clients often ask us how to maintain that lush, green lawn when the thermometer starts climbing. Today, I'm sharing three battle-tested strategies that we implement for our residential clients throughout Wedgwood, Benbrook, Overton Park, and other Fort Worth neighborhoods we service. These tips aren't just theoretical—they're the exact methods we use to keep our 95% client retention rate through even the toughest Texas summers.

Understanding the Fort Worth Summer Challenge

Here in North Texas, we face a unique combination of extreme heat and unpredictable rainfall patterns. While spring might bring torrential downpours that leave your yard looking like a swamp, by June and July, we're typically looking at weeks without significant rain and temperatures regularly exceeding 100°F.

This isn't just uncomfortable for us—it's incredibly stressful for your grass. The clay-heavy soils common in our area can make matters worse, either holding too much moisture or becoming brick-hard during drought conditions. At New Day Landscaping, we're intimately familiar with these local challenges because we live and work right here in the Fort Worth community.

Tip #1: Strategic Mowing Adjustments for Texas Heat

When temperatures soar in Fort Worth, one of the first changes we make for our clients is adjusting our mowing strategy. While regular mowing is typically beneficial, during those brutal July and August weeks, we scale back significantly.

For most of our Overton Park and Tanglewood clients, we shift from weekly mowing to every 10-14 days during extreme heat periods. This isn't laziness or cost-cutting—it's a strategic decision that helps your grass conserve energy when it's already stressed from heat.

Additionally, we raise our mowing height by at least half an inch. For Bermuda grass (common in our area), we'll go from 1.5-2 inches up to 2-2.5 inches. For St. Augustine lawns in shadier Fort Worth properties, we might go as high as 3.5-4 inches during peak summer.

This increased grass height provides critical shade to the soil below, reducing evaporation and keeping root zones cooler. Our maintenance crews are trained specifically on seasonal adjustments for Fort Worth grass varieties, ensuring we're not applying one-size-fits-all advice to your unique property.

Tip #2: Fort Worth Watering Wisdom

Water restrictions and conservation are realities for Fort Worth homeowners, making efficient irrigation absolutely critical. After inspecting over 100 irrigation systems throughout Fort Worth, we've refined our approach to maximize efficiency while respecting both water regulations and your utility bill.

At New Day Landscaping, we follow what I call the DIET approach to watering (borrowed from our friends at Budget Lawns, but customized for North Texas conditions):

  • D - Deep watering - We aim for 1 inch of water per session, which promotes deeper root growth in our tough Fort Worth clay soil

  • I - Infrequent sessions - Even in summer heat, most Fort Worth lawns only need 2-3 watering days per week when done correctly

  • E - Early morning timing - Our team programs irrigation systems to run between 4-7 AM, when evaporation is lowest and water restriction compliance is highest

  • T - Tested output - We regularly audit irrigation systems with catch cups (similar to the tuna can trick) to ensure even distribution

For our clients without irrigation systems, we offer comprehensive inspections and efficiency upgrades that typically pay for themselves in water savings within 2-3 summers. Our irrigation technician is licensed by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), ensuring all work meets local regulations.

Tip #3: Summer-Smart Fertilization for Fort Worth Lawns

The fertilization approaches that work great in spring can severely damage your lawn during Fort Worth's summer heat. Many of our new clients come to us after experiencing brown patches from applying the wrong products at the wrong time.

For July and August in our service area, we typically recommend:

  • Stopping all nitrogen-heavy fertilizers - These stimulate growth that consumes precious water

  • Switching to potassium-based products - These improve heat and drought tolerance without excessive growth

  • Considering iron applications - These provide green color without pushing growth

For properties in Wedgwood East and surrounding areas, we've seen excellent results with a light application of our custom summer blend that's specifically formulated for the alkaline soils common in Fort Worth. This approach maintains color while minimizing stress during extreme temperature periods.

The New Day Difference: Comprehensive Summer Lawn Care

While the three tips above form the foundation of summer lawn survival, at New Day Landscaping, we provide a more comprehensive approach for our Benbrook, Tanglewood, and greater Fort Worth clients. Our summer care program includes:

  1. Regular soil moisture monitoring - We check actual root zone moisture, not just surface conditions

  2. Spot-treatment of insect issues - Summer brings chinch bugs and grubs that can devastate stressed lawns

  3. Selective weed control - Using methods that don't add additional stress to your grass

  4. Customized care schedule - Adjusting all services based on your specific grass type, soil conditions, and microclimate

This holistic approach is why we maintain our 95% client retention rate year after year, even through the toughest Texas summers. We don't just mow grass—we foster lawn health through every season.

Putting It All Together: Your Summer Lawn Action Plan

To recap, here's your Fort Worth summer lawn survival guide:

  1. Mow higher and less frequently - Give your grass breathing room during extreme heat stress

  2. Water deeply but infrequently - Train roots to grow deeper while respecting water restrictions

  3. Adjust fertilization practices - Switch to stress-reduction formulas or pause completely during peak heat

These strategies have helped us maintain beautiful lawns for our clients in Overton Park, Foster Park, and throughout our service area, even during record-breaking heat waves. The key is consistency and adaptation—responding to what your specific lawn needs rather than following a rigid calendar.
