After working with Fort Worth lawns and landscapes for years, I can tell you that our Texas heat is no joke. Every summer, I see homeowners struggle with plants that just can't handle our intense sun and limited water availability. That's why I was excited to come across this great video from Cody's Craft Corner, who shares some excellent insights on drought-tolerant plants that actually thrive in our challenging climate.
As someone who's helped over 100 local families create beautiful, low-maintenance landscaping in Fort Worth, I've learned which plants can actually deliver on their drought-tolerant promises. The five plants I'm sharing today aren't just survivors – they're thrivers that'll give you color, attract beneficial wildlife, and keep looking good even when we hit those triple-digit days that make Fort Worth summers legendary.
Here in Fort Worth, we deal with clay soil, intense summer heat, and unpredictable rainfall patterns. I've seen too many homeowners invest in beautiful plants only to watch them struggle or die during our brutal summer months. The key is choosing plants that are naturally adapted to our climate – not fighting against it.
When I'm designing landscapes for clients in Benbrook, Crowley, or anywhere around Fort Worth, these five plants are my go-to recommendations for areas that need to look great with minimal water input.
If there's one plant I recommend more than any other for Fort Worth landscapes, it's lantana. I've installed hundreds of these over the years, and they never disappoint. The two varieties that perform exceptionally well in our area are Confetti Lantana and Dallas Red Lantana.
The Confetti Lantana produces cheerful clusters of yellow and pink flowers that bloom continuously from spring through the first frost. What I love about this plant is how it establishes quickly with proper initial watering, then becomes incredibly self-sufficient. I've had clients tell me their lantanas are still blooming beautifully even after weeks without rain.
The Dallas Red Lantana brings vibrant red and orange blooms that really pop against our Texas landscape. From a professional standpoint, lantanas are also deer resistant and attract butterflies, making them perfect for creating wildlife-friendly gardens that don't require constant maintenance.
When I'm designing comprehensive landscapes, I always include salvias because they serve multiple purposes. The Mealy Blue Sage is particularly excellent for our Fort Worth climate.
What makes salvias so valuable in professional landscaping is their combination of drought tolerance and ecological benefits. They're bee magnets, which helps support our local pollinator population, but their scent naturally deters deer – a common problem in many Fort Worth neighborhoods. Once established, they require virtually no supplemental watering and provide months of continuous blooms.
I'll be honest – when clients first hear me suggest cacti, some are hesitant. But these plants offer unmatched drought tolerance and can create stunning focal points in landscape design. Three varieties that perform exceptionally well in our area are the Bunny Ear Cactus, Barrel Cactus, and Old Man Cactus.
The Old Man Cactus, with its distinctive white "hair," adds unique texture and serves as an excellent conversation piece. From a maintenance perspective, cacti are perfect for clients who want beautiful landscaping but minimal upkeep. They thrive in our clay soil with proper drainage and can handle even our most severe drought conditions.
One of the biggest challenges I face in Fort Worth landscaping is finding plants that perform well in both sun and shade conditions. Turk's Cap solves this problem beautifully.
This native Texas plant produces unique twisted flowers in pink, red, and occasionally white. What makes it invaluable for professional landscaping is its adaptability – I can use it in deep shade under large trees or in full sun areas with equal success. It's also a native species, which means it's perfectly adapted to our local soil and climate conditions.
For clients with heavily shaded areas who still want interesting blooms and texture, the Shrimp Plant is an excellent choice.
The Shrimp Plant gets its name from flowers that genuinely resemble little shrimp. It's incredibly hardy and adds an unusual element that makes landscapes memorable. In my experience, these plants establish quickly and provide reliable performance in challenging shade conditions where many other flowering plants fail.
While these plants are naturally drought-tolerant, proper installation is crucial for long-term success. I always recommend thorough soil preparation, appropriate spacing for mature size, and consistent watering during the establishment period – typically the first 6-8 weeks after planting.
The key is getting them well-established with adequate water initially, then gradually reducing irrigation as they develop their deep root systems. This approach has given me a 95% success rate with drought-tolerant installations across Fort Worth.
These five plants can transform your property into a beautiful, low-maintenance landscape that thrives even during our toughest Texas summers. At New Day Landscaping, we've helped over 100 local families create stunning outdoor spaces that work with our climate, not against it. With our detail-oriented approach and comprehensive care philosophy, we ensure every plant installation is set up for long-term success.
